Mangroves are one of the world’s most efficient plants at capturing carbon dioxide and their tangled roots stabilise coastlines and reduce erosion, also providing shelter for fish and other creatures.
Mozambique has an extensive mangrove ecosystem which has been damaged by cyclones and flooding as well as logging and clearing.
In response, a large-scale mangrove restoration initiative was launched with the local communities. This effort not only seeks to revive the environment but also aims to create sustainable employment for local residents. The project’s backers are hoping the mangroves will create a buffer around local communities, shielding them from storm surges and other extreme weather linked to the climate crisis.
This project was shot for The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)In the districts of Inhassoro, Dondo, Beira and Maputo in Mozambique
