In June 2024, widespread protests erupted in Kenya over the controversial Finance Bill 2024, which proposed new taxes on essentials like fuel, internet data, diapers, and bank transactions. The bill aimed to raise approximately $2.7 billion in revenue to address the country's budget deficit and debt. Protests began on June 18 and intensified on June 25, leading to violence in Nairobi and other cities like Mombasa and Eldoret, with clashes between police and demonstrators. Parts of parliament were set ablaze, and there were reports of injuries and confrontations involving tear gas and rubber bullets.

Many Kenyans, particularly youth activists, saw the proposed taxes as exacerbating already challenging economic conditions, while President William Ruto’s previous promises of economic relief and his "hustler" persona were perceived as contradictory given the proposed financial burdens. Facing immense public pressure and unrest, President Ruto eventually withdrew the bill on June 26, acknowledging citizens' grievances and proposing dialogue to address broader economic issues.
