{PERSONAL PROJECT}

“Ballet is created on beautiful lines and shapes.”
.

Joel Kioko is a groundbreaking Kenyan ballet dancer celebrated for his incredible talent and dedication to ballet, an art form not traditionally associated with Kenya. His journey to becoming one of the most promising young male ballet dancers is an inspiring story of perseverance, talent, and passion.

Joel grew up in Nairobi, Kenya, and discovered ballet somewhat by chance. He was introduced to the art form through the Kenyatta University Dance program under the mentorship of renowned teacher Cooper Rust, an American ballet instructor who has played a pivotal role in developing ballet in Kenya. Cooper recognized Joel's potential early on and helped him refine his skills.

Joel received scholarships to train at prestigious institutions like the English National Ballet School in London and the Academy of Dance in Virginia, USA.

His performances have been described as a blend of African rhythm and Western ballet precision, showcasing his unique identity as a Kenyan dancer in a traditionally Western art form.

Joel’s journey has not only challenged stereotypes about ballet but has also inspired many young Kenyans to explore the world of dance.

He supports the growth of ballet in Kenya, collaborating with initiatives like Dance Centre Kenya and other organizations promoting arts and culture.

Joel continues to train and perform internationally, with ambitions of becoming one of the world's leading ballet dancers and giving back to the Kenyan dance community.
